About the Oak Ridge Kennel Club

[image] The Oak Ridge Kennel Club is an American Kennel Club Licensed Club that seeks to promote the sport of purebred dogs while providing service for its community and fellowship for all interested in our canine friends. In addition to monthly meetings and weekly training classes the club also sponsors an annual AKC Licensed Conformation and Obedience Show each Spring and a B.-O.B. Match each Fall. Throughout the year the club holds programs of service and interest to the entire community.

Meetings

The Oak Ridge Kennel Club holds its regular meetings on the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at The Soup Kitchen,47 Tennessee Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN.

Directions to the Soup Kitchen: Coming into Oak Ridge from Illinois Ave.
Turn right on Oak Ridge Turnpike (State Rd. 95)
Go approximately 2.5 miles to Tyler Ave.
Traffic light at Tyler.
McDonald's will be ahead on the right.
Turn left onto Tyler. Go to the traffic light
Turn right onto Tennessee.
The Soup Kitchen will be on the left
at the corner of Towne Ave.
Across from the Blue hound Grill.

Anyone interested in dogs is welcome. Each month there is a different program or speaker on a subject of interest to dog lovers.  
The Woofer  for the coming month will have details of the program on the first page.

Training Classes

The Oak Ridge Kennel Club has Training Classes in both obedience and conformation.
Classes are held on the ORCK property.
formerly the national Guard Armory on Oak Ridge Highway.  Our property is directly behind the old armory.

the property is 2 blocks west of the intersection of  Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Hwy.

It is adjacent to Girls, Inc.
If you get to the Shell station, you have gone too far.



Fall classes will begin Tuesday September 9, 2008
Classes end October 28, 2008

When registering for a class please include the following information 
 
1. Your name and dog's name

2. Phone number
3. Email address
4. Which class you would like to sign up for
5. Classes the dog may have taken before
6. Age of dog (important for beginners and puppy class)
7.  If you are signing up for a four week class please specify which dates 
  
You will receive a phone call or email confirming that your message was received and that you are in a class.  IF you do not receive a message please try again and assume you are not in a class until you do have a conformation.

Payments are due by September 2, 2008.  If your payment has not been received by September 2 your name will be removed from the class list and your space will be given to the next person in line.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS:

Puppy Class

This class is for “baby" puppies………12 wks to 20 wks.  This is NOT an obedience class.  Puppies learn  - sit, down, stand, come, wait,  using a lure-reward method – off leash. Puppies have off leash play time with each others, developing a “learning is fun” attitude as well as gaining confidence in handling new situations. Puppies must have at least a 12 week DHL shot.

Super Puppy
Puppies must be at LEAST 16 weeks old. 5 to 9 months is the best age. Instruction will include basic sit, down, come stay in your place, being handled and examined, etc. This class is to have fun with your puppy and you will do a lot of play training. Problem behaviors will be discussed.

Beginners
This class is designed for dogs 6 months and older. We will help YOU introduce and train YOUR dog to the basics of Sit, Down, Stay, Heel and Come. This class is comprised of handlers with varying degrees of training experience and dogs of various ages and backgrounds(everything from pampered pooches to lucky rescues). Therefore, it is our goal to have each dog/handler team make substantial progress while we all (handlers, dogs and instructors) have fun in the process!
Prerequisites: open to all dogs 6 months or older.


Level 1
One minute sit stay and 3 minute down stay and the end of a flexi. Attention work, sit with attention. Sit for exam. Down command, verbal and signal. Come - on a flexi. Fronts and finish. Stand. Walking on loose leash while looking at handler. Introduce going over jumps on leash. Most Level 1 work will be done on leash, bring a flexi or long lead and a shorter leash. A Level 1 classes will focus on basic control, manners and having fun with your dog. A team graduating from Level 1 will be. familiar with pre-novice exercises.
Requirements: Must have completed a Beginner class.

Level 2
One minute sit stay and three minute down stay with handler at end of mat. Sit and down hand signal. Fronts and finishes both left and right. Stand for exam. Come off lead. Attention work.Heeling with attention. jumping-add height and distance.
Some exercises will be performed off leash.

Requirements:Must be proficient at Level 1 exercises in a busy area.

Level 3
This level will introduce dog and handler to open level competition. Heeling with patterns. Figure 8's. Drop on recall. Broad jump. Retrieve over high jump and retrieve on flat. You must be able to work your dog off leash.
Requirements: Your must have a dumbbell. Your dog must be able to retrieve a dumbbell, this will not be taught in class. You and your dog must be proficient at Level 2 exercises.

Novice Competition Prep
This class will be open to people wanting to show their dogs and are close to being ready in Novice Competition. The exercises for this include heeling on and off leash, Recalls, Stand for exam, figure 8. Sit and down stays in sight, off leash. You will work on correct footwork for heeling, fronts and finishes and attention. You will also learn how to call the exercises for each other. Basic ring etiquette will be covered and include filling out forms, dress for you and your dog, and how the judge scores the exercises.

Canine Good Citizen Readiness
This class will be preparing the handler and dog for a CGC test. Exercises will include walking on a loose lead, accepting a friendly stranger, sitting while being petted, appearance and grooming, walking through a crowd, sit and down on command/stay in place, coming when called, reaction to another dog, reaction to distractions, supervised separation. Requirements:completion of Level 1 exercises.

Rally-Obedience.
Combines dog agility and traditional obedience and will be a recognized AKC title in 2005. It will promote teamwork, quick thinking and lots of fun for both handlers and dogs. Prerequisites for Rally-1: Completion of a Level 2 class or successful evaluation for walking on a loose lead, holding a one minute sit/stay and a three minute down/stay.


Advanced Rally-Obedience.
This class will be for people who are preparing to compete at this level. Handlers must be able to work their dogs off leash, have secure 3-5 minute out of sight sit and down stay. Handlers should have taken a Rally 1 class and /or have a good understanding of the exercises.

Beginners Confirmation Class.
This class is designed for new people coming into the Breed Confirmation ring for the first time. You will learn terminology pertinent to the conformation ring. How to read and mark a catalogue will be explained. The three different patterns used in the confirmation ring will be discussed. Ring etiquette, how to stack your dog correctly, use of mats, and how to use the lead to the best of your ability will be covered. Give your dog the best chance to win. Learn to work as a team and look as good as the handlers who will be your competition. There will be constructive suggestions for new exhibitors. This class will be for six weeks. Please try to attend all sessions. A booklet will be available at the last class.

Practice Conformation for the Show Ring
This time frame will be available to people who are presently preparing to show in conformation and would like to practice in a show setting. This is for experienced exhibitors only. This is NOT a teaching class. Everyone must know conformation ring procedure. Age limit for this class will be 10 years and older. All people must be able to demonstrate correct ring procedure to participate.


Junior Handler Class
This class will be for children between the ages of 10 and 17 who are interested in junior handling for conformation. The class will be for six weeks.
A parent must be present for children under 16.

Competition Class
Group exercises will be performed concentrating on distractions and preparing for competition. Teams must be preparing for competition in Novice, Open or Utility. General guidance will be given to complete the exercises correctly, but this will not be a teaching class. Individual goals will be addressed. Teams will need to work off leash. Two people will be responsible to rotate each week to lead the class, along with the instructor. these teams may also work on these nights if it doesn't interfere.
Two runs through will be done each week, allowing each person a run through within the six weeks. Other group members must stay during the run through and be available to assist as a judge, ring steward, or as the crowd.
The week you teach will be the week of your run through.
If you have more than one dog to compete with, only one dog may be worked on a given night.
All teams and each dog must be approved by the training director.
